Just when you thought life was getting interesting…

May 27, 2008

…you realize it is, in fact, as boring as you suspected all along.

My absence here over the last few weeks is not for lack of desire. Truth be told, I’ve sat down to update the blog half a dozen times, only to be hit with a severe case of writer’s block. Life recently is uninspiring, unexciting, uneventful, and just plain snooze-worthy.

“There must be SOMETHING going on, Essaytch!” I imagine you’re all saying to yourselves. “Any funny work anecdotes?” Alas, there are none. I’ve transitioned to a new desk in the office, and life has shifted from YouTube surfing for Manager and wild event planning weekends, to posting invoices and YouTube surfing for pleasure…because I’m THAT BORED. Oh wait! There’s a guy on this floor that gives me creepy eyes every time he walks by my desk. And I killed my bean plant over the weekend. Does that count? No? *sigh*

So what HAS been happening? Well, in the time that has passed since my last post, I have:

-used Fabulous New Job’s tickets to see a Mariner’s game. They finally won, and would like to credit that to the rowdy cheers of “Come on RAUUUUUUUUL!” and “I-CHI-ROHHHHHHHH!” coming from our section on the first base side.
-been sunburned twice.
-went Garage Sale-ing. Purchased two books for $2. Have yet to open either.
-watched about 80 episodes of Stargate SG1 and 10 episodes of Battlestar Galactica.
-watched the successful landing of the Phoenix Mars Lander. It was a tense 15 minutes, but when the EDL Communications officer exclaimed “Phoenix has landed, I repeat: PHOENIX HAS LANDED!” and everyone started cheering and jumping up and down, I got a little teary-eyed.
-convinced Other Roomie to FINALLY make a doctor’s appointment to diagnose her stomach issues. I’ll admit, I played the “You’re going to feel like a complete douche-bag ten years from now when you find out you are dying, and a proper diagnosis could have been made early if only you had GONE TO THE DOCTOR LIKE EVERYONE TOLD YOU” card. Hey, it’s worked for me before.
-went to my first ever film screening as part of the Seattle International Film Festival. Although Roomie and The Enabler fell asleep, I found the film enthralling and beautiful! Not to mention I felt VERY important and cool attending a film festival. (oooooooh! aaaaaah!)

So yeah, that’s what I’ve been up to. What about the rest of you?

  1. So what was the enthralling and beautiful film called then?

I’ll admit, even though a part of me thinks the whole Mars Lander thing is a bit of a waste of money (I mean we can’t even get our OWN planet sorted out and we’re looking for life on another one?) I also got a bit teary eyed too when all the scientists started jumping around and hugging each other. It was just so sweet seeing them get so excited. Really glad you’re back!

  2. See this is why I can’t watch sports movies….watching people accomplish something they’ve really worked hard for makes me totally cry. That is just inspiring, no matter what it is.

Oh, and the film in question is VEXILLE, an anime film by Fumihiko Sori. Generally I’m not an anime fan, having only seen one other film in my life. But, I watched the trailer and thought it looked really good. Turns out, I was right. Here’s a link for the trailer on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h4-ErPPcA_k
Doesn’t really do it justice, buty ou get the idea.

  3. Ok, I have to ask what the OTHER anime movie was? Becasue if you enjoyed VEXILLE I could recommend about half-a-dozen other great films.

Um, “Castle in the Sky” or “Metropolis” or “Nausica”…

Honestly, anime as a genre really isn’t all big busted twelve-year-olds on space ships or Sailor Outfit wearing vampire hunters.

  4. Ok, stop. Sailor Outfit wearing vampire hunters???? Good lord…

The other film I saw was “Spirited Away”. It was a stretch, and I had to see it twice before I decided that I actually ‘liked’ it. I still don’t think I ‘got’ it though.

  5. Anime has some scary examples (Lain, Akira, Vampire Hunter D), and it has some offshoots that disturb me…tenticle rape hentai for example (obviously DO NOT google that at work).

It also has a couple of my all time favorite movies EVER. Myazaki’s “Castle in the Sky” for example is a favorite of both mine and my daughter. “Spiritid Away” on the other hand (also by Myazaki) is tough to get into; like “My Neighbor Totoro” it has some VERY culturally specific references that international audiances just don’t connect with as well.

“Nausica of the Valley of the Wind” (ALSO by Myazaki) is probably one of the five movies that had the most profound impact on my childhood. I saw it twice before I was seven-years-old. It fundamnetally changed the way I envisioned storytelling.

Also great anime is the series “Cowboy Bobop” which isn’t nearly a cutesy as the name sounds and would be RIGHT up your sci-fi ally.

Actually…Gundam, Macross, Patlabor, Ghost in the Shell…you’d probably like nearly ALL of the hard sci-fi stuff. And a lot of that stuff is CLASSIC!

  6. I think it’s a season of spring thing. I cannot think of a word to write either.
I have been the most boring I have ever been, to answer your question. Though i am planning a trip to Seattle in a couple weeks!

  7. DC…wow, looks like my summer Netflix queue is now full! And thanks for the heads up on not googling “tenticle rape hentai” at work. I think I’ll google it….oh, NEVER! :)

Kristiane…hurray for Seattle trips! The weather has been really nice lately. Here’s to hoping I didn’t just jinx it.

  8. I almost got someone fired for not warning about a reference’s “google-ability” at the office, so it’s made me over cautious.

And yeah, I promenantly added the RAPE keyword to warn potential googlers ahead of time. Tenticle Hentai doesn’t sound quite as…henious. And believe me, even though I’ve only seen one “example” of the sub-genre (against my will at a bachelor’s party I couldn’t leave), henious only begins to scratcht the really foul surface. ICK. Every time I think people can’t sink any lower, “Sodomy and SPACE PROBER GHAMORA!!!” show up to prove just how wrong I am.

Actually, it was called “L.A. Blue Girl” which didn’t sound nearly as disturbing as it proved to be. WTF doesn’t even bigin to describe my overall response.

    …ahem…

Yeah, Castle in the Sky, Nausica, Metropolis, Cowboy Bebop, Gundam (older the better…Char’s Counter-Attack or Gundam 78 are friggen AWESOME), Ghost in the Shell, Appleseed, Bubblegum Crisis (not cutsie at all), Wings of Honnimese, Witchblade (that one’s kinda on the edge…a LOT of fan-service in the later episodes), and GitS Stand Alone Complex are all WAY worth netflixing.

Castle in the Sky is utter fantasy…almost nil hard sci-fi. So be warned. Nausica is sorta on the edge between fantasy and sci-fi…and the rest are all right up your Stargate SG1/Battlestar Galactica loving ally.

Actually, if you don’t like Castle in the Sky or Nausica you’re completely dead inside and have no capacity for loving great fiction. Ok, that’s not true.

    much. ;-)

  9. Dude(tte)…your life is so interesting…you could’ve made any of those into a post. Therefore, your absence is a big, fat “UNEXCUSED.”

As for me, I successfully made it through finals week.

  10. Ok, I love that some guy will be out there looking for some ‘tenticle hentai’ and he’ll end up here! Hello that guy! Welcome! Sorry you didn’t find what you’re looking for!

Oh, and what about Princess Mononoke? One of the only other anime films I’ve ever seen (that and Spirited Away). Well that and a version of The Little Mermaid that was made back in the early 80’s and was very faithful to the Hans Christian Anderson original. Which means that it broke my heart every single time and yet I still wanted to rent it every time I went to the video store. I haven’t seen it since I was a very young girl but I remember loving the animation.

  11. Princess Mononoke is also GREAT!…You’d think I like Myazaki or something.

The little mermaid you’re talking about was by the same studio that worked on Captain Harlock and Starblazers. It was the more disturbing to me than Bambi as a kid. Happily Ever After was never the same again.

I didn’t even think of that, but yeah, I’ve skewed Essaytch’s google seach phrases towards the really scary…sorry…sorta.

Essaytch, you have GOT to share the fruits of that labor with the rest of us…just the top five weirdest ones should be enough ;-)

  12. Ummm…..I got to “shemale anime porn monsters torture futanari sensei” and I stopped. The rest are full of words that make me blush to read, let alone to repeat here.

I will say this: one result was a Wikipedia article featuring an early 1800s woodcut by Hokusai called ‘The Dream of the Fisherman’s Wife’. I LOVE Hokusai’s art…so much that I would probably tatoo it on my body if I had the nerve. Suffice it to say, this particular woodcut was a little disturbing.

  13. AWESOME!!!

We turned your blog into one of the top sites for “anime porn monsters” and 19th century proto-henti woodcuts.

That’s so disturbed I just can’t even begin to put it into words. SO MANY confused ecchi trying to understand how a blog about life in the northwest ties into their particular creepy fetishes…SO PRICELESS!!!

Someday I want you to have a comment from a regular reader that says something to the effect of “I came here looking for pictures of a space alian with penis shaped tenticles violating the tushies of cute anime girls…but I stayed for the insightful stories and intellectually stimulating comments!”

Hey, a boy can dream, right?

  14. You’ve been busy. But no excuse! I’ve been robbed of some much needed giggles for weeks.

  15. Wow…I didn’t even realize it had been that long. Sorry for any withdrawl symptoms you may have experienced Billy. I’m working on a form of “Essaytch” that can be shot directly into the veins, but it is still in clinical trials…
